When you're in a smokeless zone how do you go about getting a bespoke masonry stove certified as an "approved appliance" for wood burning?

    Hey Shevek,
have been researching this for a while now, not sure if I have given you the right advice now.. I am training to build masonry stoves, kakkelovne and wood fired bread ovens.. I now think it would be possible..

AFAIK it does NOT matter whether the appliance is approved or not or whether you use approved fuel or not but whether you emit smoke from your appliance - although it is an offence to buy or sell unauthorised fuel for use in a smoke control area. Having an approved appliance and using approved fuel just gives you a due diligence defence if you do emit smoke. Can't remember exactly but look up The Clean Air Act and read it, It'll tell you exactly what any offences are but as far as I recall we could only prosecute if the chimney gave off smoke for a specified period of time. Even then we'd give plenty of warnings etc.
Also the council can serve a notice on an owner to undertake works to modify an appliance - which presumably means that you can use an "unapproved" appliance so long as it has been modified not to emit smoke. Otherwise the Act would state that the council can order the owner to fit an approved appliance.

    Good points windy..
Think the worry with masonry stoves is that there is no option to just swap out for an approved appliance, the investment is considerable and no one would reasonably take the risk!
I do know of systems that are DEFRA exempt although they still lack the efficiency test reports now necessary for Part J compliance..

House insurance may well be another problem re approved or heta's (or whatever) certification.

A relative and I have the same wood burner but he has the smokeless version and mine is the normal version. The difference appears to be he has a stop (or extra air holes) that limit how low the air can be turned down. This means his burns a bit fast once upto temperature.

Cwatters..Sounds like what clearview do..cost quite a bit extra for that nubbin!
joe90..Yes, I think that is the deal, folk here tend to be looking for compliant systems..Part Jand DEFRA exempt if they are in a smoke control zone..
That is what I am would like for my place and hope to be able to offer it to others!
