I would like to get opinions on the opitimium front door width.

I appreciate that the size of the house/porch has a bearing and of course building regs state the door itself needs to provide a clear opening of 775mm.

Our porch is only 2m x 2m with a structural opening of 1400 x 2100, so was thinking of a 900mm door and a glass panel to the side or mabe a chunky 250mm frame.

Any smart thoughts and ideas out there?

Big enough to get the largest object in your house through. Any other consideration is purely cosmetic (unless you want to obsess about the difference in u-values between door and adjacent wall).

As Seret aludes, it's about aesthetics. I assume you're having it made and if you're going for something wide and thick, perhaps insulated and double or even triple glazed, bear in mind the weight and ensure the frame is up to taking that weight. You could also look at continous, "piano type" hinges. The last exterior door I made was oak and 58mm thick and was very heavy. Bear in mind the bigger the door the greater the potential for movement so construction techniques have to allow for that.

How about having a split door. If your opening is 1400 then it should be possible to get atleast 1200 inside the frame meaning an even split gives you 600 which is more than enough for normal use and giving a nice wide opening when needed.

Lifetime Homes, for example, asks for a 800 mm clear opening:
