I have an uneasy feeling that the OP could be about to make some fundamental mistakes, although my technical/practical knowledge is nowhere near good enough to make a convincing case - if my instincts are correct.

I've just posted over there, as like you I think this chap could make some big mistakes. Looking at the house it seems an ideal candidate for EWI, tatty looking externally, solid brick walls, lots of internal DIY fitting out of electrics, plumbing etc needed that's going to be hampered by an internal insulation solution.

If he could be persuaded to come over here and exchange views with some of those here with expertise in EWI it might well save him a lot of hassle.

You'll have seen that I've tried, and I did PM him right at the start of his thread.

At least 'Cideredd' has promised to come over and read around it all after I'd pointed out the potential for error, so perhaps he'll have some influence.

Thanks for taking this up.

I think the OP could use some feed back on the costs of EWI. Not sure how many quotes he's had but first one looks expensive at £20K.

I think he's in denial over the potential pitfalls if the work isn't done properly; doesn't really want to hear anything too "negative". I'm not at all convinced he took my advice to read-up on here before making any decisions.

    You've tried, Jeremy's tried, but yet...

I've just given him another big hint that there are people over here who have the knowledge he needs.
  1.
JSH, re your comment on e-build re U values, it's 0.3 for AD L1B, not 0.25, although we all ought to persuade him to go for 0.25 or less! Re his comment re suppliers, can you point him to Clan (Chris Hirst) and re his comment on having his own scaff, perhaps point out that a contractor may not wish to use an un-ticketed scaff?! Oh, and point him to the 'Breaking the Mould' papers to really frighten him!

Thanks. Sorry to order you (and/or Joiner) about!

    Nick

Nice spot about the U value, thanks.

Hopefully the chap will be over here soon to seek out some much needed advice.

Isn't the joining fee going to be a bit off-putting?

That might be an issue, Damon. Depends on whether he appreciates the value of what's on offer! As others have said, it's money well spent.

(Do I understand correctly that actually reading the threads is free?)

That's my understanding, but if you are expecting him to join in here, that's different. Wasn't entirely clear to me.

£6? What's that as a percentage of the cost of doing it wrong?!

Tried to get that across, Nick.

Hope he sees past the joining fee!

    Nice one, Jim.
