Abu Dhabi has ordered four nuclear plants from South Korea. Not to be outdone, the Saudis are drawing up plans for an even bigger nuclear effort.
The Saudis are also planning to add 41 gigawatts of solar capacity to their grid. That is an enormous amount, roughly equivalent to Saudi Arabia’s entire current power capacity.

That's good, looks like they're starting to treat their sunshine and low land value in the desert as a resource and are looking to export all that PV juice. Plenty of customers for daytime electricity in hot countries.

It could also mean that the Oil is running out quicker than they're saying.

Think, Saudi Arabia could be the Saudi Arabia of PV! Oh, wait...

PS. Yes, good that they're doing it, but partially because they are failing to control consumption at all and it was eating into exports, so they won't be making any net carbon reduction at all I suspect.

But as they'll be exporting the stuff to countries that don't have as many huge SUVs per capita, perhaps it'll mean it will last a little longer?

Possibly. But that will give a certain group of cornucopians an excuse to claim that "there is no such thing as peak oil" and "we can have cheap oil forever" so I think the result when it drops will be just as unpleasant. Merely very slightly delayed ingratification...

I think it shows that the economic concept of substitution works as they are swapping oil energy for PV energy.
Should stabilise the price of oil as well. We shall see, is it around a $100/barrel at the moment or is it at the $240/barrel that the Peak Oil people claimed it would be by now.

Saudi Arabia can probably get a better price on installing PV than we can and still export their non renewable resource for dollars to buy the PV. Global Trade, or Division of Labour, one of two economic theories that always holds true.

Was some American on Radio 4 spouting about it when oil hit about $140 in 2008 I think.

    Quick Google threw this up:

Plenty of sunshine in Norfolk, and it is a desert, culturally, financially and socially (feel the kicking starting already)

as in monoculture? minimal biodiversity, massive biomass growth, practically hydroponic in ruined soil, might as well be desert sand.

Not really the amount that has been misreported, that was for accountancy purposes.
What really limits production is price, hence we have lots of coal in the ground here as it has been cheaper to buy it in than dig it out.
The US has had, what looks to me, as an unofficial policy of depleting other nations resources, India and the Chinese seem to be doing the same now.

Who invented that, bigtime? Us! (that's us, not USA). Have we ever acknowledged that to the world? (different to grovelling apology - after all, it wasn't us alive today who did it - or is it still going on?).

Hey the British Empire did its fair share of plundering, but the idea predates it by a few millenia.

Yeah but the British Empire did it like never remotely before, to feed its Industrial Revolution. Make no mistake, we Brits invented what the American have inherited and perfected (as usual).
