I hope this is allowed, I have looked through the rules and can't see that its not.

I have a friend who is helping a restoration of an old house, they have had to take some oak beams out and they are not re-using them.

He asked me if I was interested but I can't use them as they are curved ( for over arched doorways). Before he tries to sell them openly he agreed I could try the forum first. They will be cheaper than buying from a specialist salvage yard.

If its allowed and anyone is interested in knowing more, then I will post more details.

I have deleted my e-mail contact so you have to post so I remain transparent

I'm looking for a heating engineer that can spec and install a heating system for my house.

So far I have had around 6 in, 2 spent a whole day here measuring etc, only one sent a quote, but when I tried to take him up on it he disappeared!!!!

Two declined to spec the whole job, one never turned up and one has tried to be as helpful as possible, but says it is really out of his remit.

The house is about 600 years old in places, some timber framing with a brick facade, some solid brick. There are 4 rooms downstairs and 3 upstairs plus bathroom. Though they are a fair size. I can give fuller details as and when if neccessary.

We have an oil fired wick rayburn designed for up to 8 rads, trying to power 14, some of which are 8' long!!!!!

They get tepid.

We have two wood burning stoves and one open fire upstairs in a bedroom.

I'd like to try and get away from oil, though I love the rayburn for cooking.

The lounge wood bourner needs replacing, it is cracking and passed it's best. i think it was installed in 1978, so has done well.

I thought I'd replace this with a wood burner with back boiler. This could heat the water and supply our central heating. In order to have heating before we get up and light the fire, one engineer suggested we have a heat store/accumulator tank, which would supply us with morning heating to get up with ........ can't wait!!!

For the summer I thought we'd have some solar panels.

The rayburn can continue to be plumbed in to the hot water system, but I'd probably not light both wicks, just the cooking one.

We have no gas.

We have plenty of free wood.

We are 450m from the road, so the mains water supply is long and our pressure is quite low at the house, (a plumber friend is going to test it at the point it comes into the house for us, so I'll have a pressure and flow rate soon.) so we have two salamander 3.3bar pumps doing whole house pumping of both hot and cold water.

I started my search in March, thinking this year we'd be warm in the house. We work from home, so my wife gets the room with the other wood burner and I get a wooly jumper and thick coat. But the cold plays havoc with trying to work accurately on a pc!!!!

Is there anyone here who can do this, or has had something similar done that can recommend a company?

Graham

We have a large old farm property in Brittany, northern France. We are slowly renovating it using traditional methods, my hubbie is a master stonemason who specialises in restoring old buildings (churches, manors etc) but this time hes doing it for us! His knowledge of stone and lime is amazing and he is very passionate about it. If anyone is interested in learning about building with stone, carving, lime and all its applications then he would be a great person to work alongside - he can talk about it relentlessly! We have a lot of work to do to repair our old 15thC house and outlying buildings. We hope to thatch some areas, use mainly reclaimed materials or materials sourced locally, lay clay floors. Will be making an outdoor composting loo, poss reed bed, poss small hydro system.

Lots of work on the land and in the woods, coppicing etc. We are creating a large stone raised bed area for our kitchen garden. We make our own cider using the traditional cider press here. We keep sheep, poultry, rabbits, pigeons etc for our own consumption and try to be as self-sufficient as possible.

We are looking for someone to come and live and help out here - swapping skills and knowledge, help look after the animals (pigs and cows should be here soon), carry out building maintenance, help with the land, etc.

We would rather a long stay - 12-24 months - perhaps a couple, even kids, the most important thing would be that we were like minded and could get on and both got something out of it. Due to France's draconian laws its impossible to pay someone casually - no money could be involved and you would need to be prepared to become a resident here to get basic health cover. We would provide accommodation in a mobile home and all food - you may prefer your own area to do your own veg and animals? We have loads of space. We could however offer the right person some legit work with my hubbie when he does go and work (in the Channel Islands), which he does about once a month for a few days.

May suit someone in a transitionial period of their live, or a semi-retired couple who have income from their home, or someone looking to downshift or move to France and would like a real taste of it first?

If you interested in finding our more initially - please email me: heritage.admin@orange.fr
Regards
Abbaye

Most importantly, we don't think a dark grey monolith looks that good on the hill so we are open to suggestions for finishes..
Anyone out there interested in designing, monitoring or even helping fund this is most welcome to get in touch or come round for a cuppa and look the place over.
We are in rural Mid Wales

Ok, this is still at visualisation stage but, I am looking for people who might be interested in getting together to acquire a plot of land for a low or no carbon self build project, perhaps four to six dwellings.

I'm envisaging doing this in the South of England or possibly Normandy. The rules would be, everyone must commit, legally, until the final house is finished. Other details, for example which type of L C housing, how it will be funded, who does what, what the investment comprises (cash, mortgages) would be worked out by the final group.

Maybe lots of people here have experience of this kind of project etc, I don't, this is completely new to me but I am willing to support the gathering of candidates for such a project until the final group comes together.

Please let me know if you'd be interested.

For some reason this publication is considered a rarity and the asking price consequentially inflated to ridiculous levels. When I first investigated what it was worth there were sums in excess of £300 coming up, which is bloody silly. I put it onto Amazon at £50 and a number of other inflated sellers vanished, leaving just the one other who reduced their price to a few pence over £50! It didn't sell anyway, which didn't surprise me even at that price!!

Anyway, it's on offer here to the highest 'bidder' plus postage (it's not a big publication, so the postage won't be much). I won't put it on eBay in case it goes to one of those grasping dealers who'll put it up again for some stupid price. I'd rather it went to a good home that will make use of it.

If you go on Amazon or Google it, you'll get an idea of what it's about.

Published by the Wadebridge Ecological Centre in Cornwall, it's a typical 70s eco publication from the days when those of us who were in to such things developed our own technology and made what we could out of what was to hand. I bought it in 1991 at a library sale at Compton campus when the University of Wolverhampton was still the Polytechnic. It had only ever been taken out once.

It's actually in very good nick, still with the library stickers on it to avoid defacing the pages, and contains pretty much all the information you'll need to build your own hydropower source, but remember you've still got to provide the means of generating that electrical power from the water turbine, but you're spoilt for choice there.

If you're interested then email your bid to

Oldcollier@btinternet.com

And it’ll go to the highest bidder, even there’s only one!

I’m on holiday until Sunday 10th, so if you do email I can’t get back to you before then.

Thanks.

We are ideally looking to employ a couple to come and live and work on our small organic farm in North Northumberland. We are right at the beginning of two eco-builds, one out of timber and the other straw and are also developing our kitchen garden and curing house (bacon, salami, air dried ham etc). We are hoping to find two capable people, preferably with basic joinery skills, who would relish the opportunity to learn and put into practise the whole range of alternative building skills. In addition we would require you to look after livestock (training provided), muck out, carry out building maintenance, do some field work and progress the kitchen garden. In short we are looking for capable, open minded people with a can do attitude to come and muck in. Finally, some domestic cleaning of very chaotic farmhouse (approx. 10hrs/wk) and occasional childcare also required. In return we are offering accomodation in a mobile home, local use of the farm pick up and #250 / 40 hr week each. If you are interested please contact us either through this discussion or by e-mail aelsworth@heip.co.uk or by phone 07775501068. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

 Hi Everyone.

I want to let you know about a free listing service on my website Stovesonline. Our customers are increasingly interested in sustainable building and many are planning or in the middle of newbuilds and extensions. What better time to steer them towards more sustainable solutions.
So we have made a section on the site where our customers can see listings for various sustainable suppliers. Joining is free and will continue to be so - this is not a money making exercise.
Currently there are the following sections:

Architecs / Consultants
Solar Thermal
Solar Electric
Wind Power
Biomass boilers - meaning largescale woodchip boilers, etc
Heat accumulators
General building products
Books and Information

You can see what the main page looks like here: http://www.stovesonline.co.uk/services/sustainable-suppliers.html

obviously as we have only just launched it there are few listings on there at the moment.

You can fill in an application form here: http://www.stovesonline.co.uk/services/services-form-altenergy.asp

We have finished a login system so that once you are set up you will get access details to maintain your own listing and upload pictures and logos, etc. It will be a few weeks before I get round to sending out these details though...

Cheers 4 now

Sune
