Why can you get grey or black plastic drainage pipe?

I think it is a cosmetic thing. I am just replacing our grey guttering with black for this reason. Old grey stuff will be fitted to the workshop out back so no wastage.

I think you're right. Ours is all internal drainage so doesn't matter.

Traditionally everything was black cast iron, then plastic came along and 'black' was closer to the real thing, now of course there is real cast iron look-a-like plastic, black plastic and grey plastic. I have to paint ours yellow (SWMBO) so I bought grey!

Bear in mind the affects of UV on plastic colour - white best for this reason

White might normally be the best colour to reflect UV light but is white drainage pipe designed to resist UV? May only be intended for use indoors?

A while ago I needed some uPVC 'angle'. As soon as I mentioned that it would be used out in the sun the supplier suggested that black would be best. IIRC it's the filler/colour in the black that helps give it a longer life. With white the plastic is more translucent and the UV can get in 'deeper'?

Much more recently I've experienced white/clear cable ties failing before black ones. They were used to strap a cable to the side of a mast. The white/clear are so brittle they've started to fall off. The black ones still seem fine.

If I remember correctly from my time in BT, cables not buried were black and the black additive was to resist UV degradation.

Also blue MDPE water pipe has to be buried, but black's OK overground.

I would expect the black stuff to be more susceptible to thermal expansion problems as well....
