I have a bay window with single glazing. According to Haynes Eco House Manual it is possible to replace single glazing in timber structures such as bay windows with double glazing without replacing the frame. Does anyone have any experience of this or any thoughts on it?

Yep it will be a good idea -- best to make the glazing rebates big enough to take 4:6:4 units use gas filled low E new glazing.

It is possible to fit stepped units but not so good. Local glaziers should be able to do the glass and a carpenter the frame alterations.

It is almost pointless doing this unless you draught proof the window casements and frames sills etc.

I would drill drainage holes 8mm under all the new dg units to make sure that they cannot sit in a pool of water.

I've also read that it's important to use flat spacers not wedges under the unit to center it vertically. As I understand it if you use a wedge they only support one of the two panes.

I've done something similiar several times

Once I routed out the rebate a bit to increase the space for the unit
another time we cut the rebate out and stuck new wood on the inside of the frame again to
allow a thicker unit to fit in , the wider the better

I used beading rather than putty as you can get a bottom bead thats shaped to allow the flat spacer under the dg unit
and the bead sits on the spacer and acts as a drain
Though would this bridge the dg unit a bit?

Thank you very much everyone for your help. As soon as it stops raining (if it ever does!) I'll have a more thorough look at the window...
