    Bumping this thread for a thought.

    Yes, yanking heat out of a river will cool it down, possibly to a material degree.

    But ... power and industrial plants inject heat *into* rivers via cooling water.

    Is there potential for use of such systems downstream as a form of mitigation? What is the allowable temperature increase in released cooling water over that taken in, or example?

    Probably more applicable to smaller facilities than large power plants.

    I recall that in France nuclear power stations have to shut down in summer sometimes because they raise the temperatures of their rivers too much.

    I seem to remember that one of the east coast nuclear stations here had a jellyfish problem, not sure how true it was.
    I should think that a 1 GWe nuclear station produces at least the same amount of thermal energy, though most is discarded to the atmosphere I think.
    I used to live near Three Mile Island, they dumped a lot of heat into the river once.
