Looking for a contractor to install standing seam metal roofing, Colchester Essex area. Monopitch roof, 100 sq.m., 2 rooflights, 1 flue. Simple and straightforward and really looking for commercial system. Too small for commercial installers.
Also metal cladding on walls installed over insulation and timber battens, 220 sq.m. Same problem finding installers.
On site August/September.
Anybody interested?

save yourself a fortune... we got quoted Â£100k for zinc, Â£50k for tata urban seam supply and install, we bought all the bits for Â£15k and got ourselves and a few labourers on the free course. will take 1-2 weeks to install

I had quotes of Â£8.5k for zinc, Â£5k for tata urban and materials only for tata urban of Â£2.5k.
Only two small flat roofs totaling around 75m2.

I was all set to look into going ahead and trying to do it myself but saw a little at an exhibition (missing the actual demo of it being out together!) and saw the need for some tools I didn't have which made me wonder if it would be worth doing myself (time another factor). Did you have to get certain tools (seamer?) for the job novice ?

I've been quoted Â£2749 by Tata for their Colorcoat Urban on a simple pitched roof. They got the area slightly wrong because they misinterpreted my sketch - I'd drawn it as if the roof was 'unfolded' along the ridge to show the actual area of roof covering, but they interpreted it as a plan. So their quote was for 70 m^2 when the roof actually has about 55 m^2 of covering, also I think they may have quoted for two gables not one, not taking account of the semi-detached part!

But anyway, it should give a good idea. The actual roofing panels are only Â£16.17 + VAT per square metre. They do quote for the full kit including tools right down to a nail gun and nails plus delivery (Â£520 + VAT!, though say it may be lower if co-ordinated with other deliveries in the area) which brings the price up quite a bit if it's a relatively small roof.

Take a drive round and see who is roofing what, with what, locally - a mate of mine got an excellent deal on Kalzip aluminium standing seam from the Kalzip installer working on a nearby new build school. His job probably wasn't big enough but tacked onto the back of other local work................

Save yourself a bundle - why not 'agricultural' corrugated iron (but heavy gauge + maybe colorcoat)? Looks great, but needs a detailing re-think.

I haven't seen a seam metal roof that isn't accompanied by clumsy peripheral flashing/detailing/workmanship - unless it's restricted absolutely to the basic covering without their peripheral stuff.

I also see it corroding. Especially the coated steel type which is so much cheaper than zinc, copper, stainless etc - always brown streaked.

You can avoid most of the "peripherals" except a few (usually concealed) flashing details. From the outside, my mates roof looks like a traditional slated roof with wooden WB's and a very slim verge detail with a eaves "roll over" and concealed gutter "drip".

Aluminium is not likley to suffer corrosion over the roof lifetime and is 100% recyclable at the end

My roof is a simple straightforward 100 sq.m. monopitch. So simple I am sure I could do it myself. Saw Zambelli at Ecobuild, new to this country from Germany: one clip per standing seam, really really easy, could do it myself but not the flashings. But can't find anybody who has even heard of it and having difficulty getting a recommended installer from the rep.
However, just filled in the form from Phil Spencer's find a tradesman site, and got 2 good replies that I will be following up.

Will look at the tata system as well. Thanks to all.
I did put some standing seam roofing on a school project 20+ years ago, and whilst details will have moved on apace since then, at the time we had trouble with a sponge-type filler at the ridge which slotted inbetween the seams: the birds kept pulling it out, so something to watch in the detailing.

Not interested in steel: this has got to last my lifetime+ and as already said, the cut edges rust at some point in their life. I am looking to specify for the lifetime of the building. Will keep you posted.

Well, every coated steel standing seam job I see, is brown streaked - rust starting I presume.

No problems with steel roofs up here in my part of Canada. The galvalume cut edges should not rust if cut with an appropriate cutter (not an angle grinder). VicWest (one of the main manufacturers here) offers a 40 year paint guarantee, too.

I am just preparing to do a standing seam roof and found most suppliers didn't want to know.
I sent my plans to vmzinc and they sent them out all their installers and I have three quoting for a barrel vaulted roof of 140m2 about Â£16000 including rainwater goods.

250m2 but also used it for the eaves
Agree with tom.. detailing is clunky but if you work with them BEFORE ordering its suprising the more elegant solutions they can come up with.
Worse quote for zinc etc was Â£100k+
Their lengthy 40 year material guaruntee from a massive company also swayed.
They supply tools.

I think the staining you see is probably cosmetic and caused by algae or dirt or a combination of the two rather than corrosion. I pass two coated standing seam roofs on the way to work and both have what appears to be minor cosmetic staining.

Just had a quote from Euroclad for their Vieozinc standing seam roofing which is zinc coatede aluminium for a little less than the Colorcoat, what are your opinions on this?

I used Euroclad Vieozinc for a 70m2 monopitch roof. They were helpful designing the flashings. The installation was straightforward, they had the tool to fold over the seem for hire. I visited the works outside Cardiff to make sense of the finer details.
One thing about a metal roofing is the rain noise and expansion in the sun.

Thanks, this is good to know as the roof is very simple but there is a galvanised steel box that acts as a chimney, covering the hole through which the flue emerges which may require some slightly unusual flashing. I wish to reuse this as there is space in it for a MHRV outlet and maybe also a soil vent, which seems better than having three different penetrations in the roof.

I quite like the sound heavy rain makes on the present asbestos cement sheets but I doubt it will be as noticeable once replaced. Also I know what you mean about expansion noises as our steel cladding makes it in the sun sometimes.

Now we just need the approval of Halifax to go ahead...

My has been finished about 3 months now. VMzinc, no rain noise at all as we used warmcel insulation.

Depending on where you are I can recommend someone.

If you want quote ask VMzinc to send it out to all their installers and then any that are interested will contact you.
I had 3 quotes from this, and chose one who was the most helpful and they have done a very good job.

I'm not sure why the Tata colourcoat metal roof should stain. The only areas where the metal would be exposed would be the lowest point of the strip where it meets the gutter. Even then, the exposed area must be very small, essentially the cross section between the covering coats.

I don't think that the staining you see is corrosion related, but probably caused by dirt or algal growth where water runs over it.

A McDonalds near me has a standing seam roof in what appears to be a zinc finish (probably Vieo Zinc which is aluminium coated with zinc) and that is quite badly stained. I think it's caused by all the seagulls that gather there because of the food litter.

As an update to this thread, I found out from the Tata that their metal roof contains zinc, meaning that it will have some protection even when it is scratched.
