Dear all, as some will know I am planning my new build and we wanted a brick outer skin. The wall will be block inner, 300mm cavity filled with mineral wool. I am dissapoited to see that Devon is classed as having exposure that warrents a void with a brick outer skin and not full fill. We dont want the walls any thicker and dont want plastic insulation. It may be that we have to settle with a rendered finish . :cry:Any thought please

Not going to argue about brick outer - not my taste but you say you want it. Still, is the block inner up for discussion? Timber of some sort there would allow a 50 mm cavity before the brick with 300 mm (or a bit more to compensate for the loss of the insulation provided by the block) of mineral wool and actually reduce the overall wall thickness a bit, I'd have thought.

    Maybe, inside to out:

Whatever you'd have put inside the blocks.
    Vapour barrier.
    OSB
150 mm x something vertical studs full filled with mineral wool.
50 mm x something horizontal beams full filled with mineral wool.
150 mm x something vertical studs staggered vs inner ones full filled with mineral wool.
    Panelvent.
    50 mm cavity.
    Brick outer.

Similar U-value I'd guess but somewhere over 100 mm thinner.

Block or stud loadbearing inner (blocks needn't be Regs deemed-to-satisfy 215 laid-flat - mostly 140 or even 100, with engineer justification), min wool EWI (if not EPS), brick slips or very convincing faked-in-render bricks. Save yourself a bundle!

Just about to do the faked brickwork thing in Tavistock - come have a look when it's happening.

Not sure of the total wall build up but you can probably reckon it from the scale of the bricks. With the expertise of the consultants involved I'm guessing (hoping) they've found a way to suitably ventilate the cavity so the brick is essentially a ventilated rainscreen.

Really hope this approach works as I think it could convince the mainstream.

I think Isover CWS 32 is approved for full fill in all exposure zones. NHBC wont approve it for fairface in similar situation.

I would go full fill with 300 batts (nor wool) , special ties, mine worked fine and no problems with the recent prolonged driving rain <tonyshouse.info>

Despite its name it's probably not an “exposed” location, I'd guess.

Thanks guys for your quick responses, I am a fan of thermal mass and being able to hang things on a wall that sounds solid  hence the internal blockwork. I confess I said mineral wool when I should have said batts (I am actually copying Tony's House) so the next question is:- are batts ok for full fill in an area deemed to have high exposure? SWMBO is now coming round to the idea of a rendered finish because I said I could round off all the corners so it didnt look crisp and there are a lot of stone and cob cottages in the area!!!!!!
