It's a levelling screed under the firebed. We've removed the old base in its entirety, replacing it with a ground-bearing 150 mm concrete slab on 250 mm EPS. Needs to total over 250mm for an open fire/fire basket.
Less than 250mm is ok for a stove if it's certified not to raise the hearth over 100C.]]>
