I just paid £2500 cash for A rated DGU units for a whole house and £500 fitting. This included french doors, a large bay window, a fully glazed door and 14 large units!
Am I missing something here? But at the above prices quoted I'd have been looking at £12,000 plus as a rough in the head calc. That's a lot of payback time regardless of how ungreen PVC may be?
- We are in a fairly exposed situation and I was hoping that the aluclad/ composite approach would help with weather proofing as well as reducing maintenance, although maybe this isn't the case?
Do you know any manufacturers who would meet your criteria e.g. drained ventilated design, deep preservative treatment and appropriate testing and certification? Even better if they are UK based!

Apparently they take a one metre square pane and crank the wind up until the glazing deflects by 25mm. Hard to imagine, and I can't think that it does the seals any good, but it's probably a good test. We had 100 mph winds on Christmas Day two years ago and you could see all the windows bow in and out with the wind. Very disconcerting.
Posted By: SwarmMonty, you seem very knowledgeable on windowsand fine arts!
Posted By: ward32I found a good window manufacturer in Scotland
Posted By: fostertomAs always, try Glasgow based Russell Timbertech and Irish (but big in UK) Munster Joinery - unbeatable on price, especially Russell's Uw 1.1 basic triple glazed range

Alu clad. Elsewhere recently on this forum it's been said that modern factory finish is so good it makes Alu clad unnecessary. Good, because Alu clad is not ideal -

invalidates the most important technique of bringing insulation as far as possible across to cover as much as poss of the outside face of the frame - you can cover the outside face of the Alu cladding but being air filled the outside face of the timber frame behind it is still fully exposed to outside air.
Posted By: spooky I ended up going for Velfac (
Posted By: Monty GerhardyWith single light windows it’s not impossible to just provide cladding to the sash. Now there’s a thought !I thought about that but Russell couldn't get their head round it. It involves a bit more than just that - alucladding not just to sashes but also to cill rails and mullions.
