What do you think of this?

Identifies devices by their electricity usage and lets you name and monitor them on your mobile. You can also add plugs that allow you to turn off devices remotely.

At a 170 quid!! About 2 years worth of water heating for a couple of people, and you can hardly turn that off.

Nice idea, but really needs to be 50 quid. Then you have to walk downstairs to turn the light off in the living room.

I hate to say it, but as 'clever' as these devices are, they are really missing the point. I am a fan of monitoring just about everything, then finding out what is necessary and what isn't. I get rid of the unnecessary things completely and tightly control the necessary ones. Cost little, is scalable and very effective.

Several years ago some academics in Oxford claimed they could distinguish individual appliances by their moment-to-moment patterns of power usage. There was going to be a product. It never came - unless this is it. More likely, the Belgians have cracked the problem independently.

I always thought it pointless to know how many watts an appliance draws at any particular moment. You need to know how much energy it consumes over time. Only then can you make sensible energy-saving decisions of the kind ST describes.

    Smappee appears to do that.

Yes, it's priced for early adopters (I could have said that in a less nice way) but it might be of interest to people who are unable to cope with life except through their iPhones.

There are a number of people working on this, more for monitoring for research purposes rather than for individuals. E.g.,

Thanks Ed, interesting to see the NILM community already has its own private language (which I don't understand). On a quick read, I was unable to figure out what the various algorithms are supposed to do.
