Recently Bath and North East Somerset council have announced they will be providing top up funding for the Green Deal with up to £3000 available for boiler replacement and £7000 for non-cavity wall insulation, as well as some other measures.

Seems like a good thing, but the Green Deal has had such a battering I'm slightly wary. The assessment is still £150 unless you're on certain benefits.

What are your thoughts/what should I look out for?

I wonder if the council has somehow obtained some ECO or similar funding?

Cambridgshire is similarly providing GD top up funding for single-skin EWI/IWI of up to £6000.

Do you mean solid brick walls or only for half brick walls?

Don't know about Cambridgeshire but B&NES seems to be for any walls that cannot have CWI installed, whether they are solid masonry, system built etc.

l had a replacement A rated combo boiler installed in a three bed semi, last year. The total cost was £1200.

Green Deal plus an additional council top up! Something is not right, is someone playing the system?

Yes, DECC I think. They have had a total failure with the GD and are probably clutching at straws now.

Slightly off topic but there's a new announcement originally due in November, now looking like 7th December, on a replacement (or restart) of the GDHIF.

    These are the details: http://www.cse.org.uk/advice/energyathome

Boiler replacements can get pretty pricey though, especially if it's not a straight swap, eg in our case replacing a back boiler in the middle of the house downstairs with say a combi boiler somewhere else, say upstairs vented through the roof, new/rerouted gas pipes and plumbing etc.

Just for info.. BG are advertising saying "90% of homes that need it will get it free from British Gas"

    http://britishgas.presscentre.com/Press-releases/British-Gas-rolling-out-free-insulation-4c2.aspx

"Millions of people risk not claiming free money-saving improvements because they don’t realise their home is eligible for help. Research by British Gas has uncovered that only one in five people believe their home qualifies for free insulation, despite it being available to 90% of homes that need it. "

Can check if you qualify here..

I believe that also applies to the Huntingdonshire part of Cambs.

Apparently BANES has got £700 000 from the DECC. Slight gripe of mine but by 'solid wall' they mean anything that isn't a cavity wall suitable for CWI, even if it's anything but solid.

    Just tried it:

"You may be eligible for FREE cavity wall insulation"

"May"? My experience of these schemes is that they will find any old reason to exclude people whether the house can be better insulated or not.

In the end I had to get it done privately.

    FWIW:

I was at an Action on Energy "meet the buyer" event this evening - they're looking for EWI and IWI installers, Green Deal Assessors etc.

Action on Energy have ~£6m left to spend on EWI or IWI for "hard to treat" properties before June 2015.

Cambridge(shire) council, to help the process along the way, will pay for your PAS2030 ticket and training as a solid wall installer in the area. Smartlife programme:

    http://www.smartlife.org.uk/
    http://www.smartlife.org.uk/free-pas2030-courses-solid-wall-insulation-courses/

I'm going to employ my brother, get him trained up as a solid wall installer, then have him bid for the work on his own home by Action on Energy. (labour content of bill for EWI is approx equal to the 25% homeowner contribution)

The free training to open the market up to more people is the best news I have seen for a long time.

Is it possible that this funding is coming from the interest payments.

Interest rates are 1/2% and for this kind of big money lo wish rates should be possible

This is £7 (and a bit less than 3p) for each person in Cambridgeshire; there are 806,700 of 'em says Wikipedia. I hope they're snug and warm with it.

About enough to put a draft excluder on a door, which will probably have the same effect.
