Ok from a green building perspective holes in the walls are bad news, but does anyone know for a given size wall vent how much air is expected to enter/leave the building through it?

It will vary given the wind speed and direction, and how many other holes there are etc., but some rule of thumb must exist for the building regs to conclude that a ventilation area of 850mm2 per kW of wood burner is necessary in a room. What air flow is expected? Likewise how many ACH does opening a window create? Anyone know?

Someone once told me that a 600mm x 600mm square hole in an otherwise airtight house equated to 1 ach at 50 pa

a whole door removed or half a patio door missing = 10

all the regs are probably belt and braces approach then double it. most likely no air vent would be necessary in any but the most airtight of homes if the guy above was right!

Below 5kW I think you are fine with no hole. Mine is 5-8kW and I did not need one.
