Just read this. Quite interesting really. Energy use in UK seemed to peak in 85 even though we now have more electrical gadgets.

Not really surprising if this is taken as total energy use. Car economy 100% improved in that time. House better insulated, bulbs, electronics instead of valves etc etc.

It could be argued that we now get better utility for every kg of CO2 we push out.
One of the measures is kg CO2/ GDP. Not one I particularly like, but useful. It does encourage 'exporting' the problem and then kicking the people we export the problem to.

Also a lot of our raw materials and lower-grade tat is made abroad, e.g., in China, so doesn't get counted in our energy budget. Vs, much smaller quantities of higher valued exports which might have a high embodied energy per tonne but not so large per £10⁶.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the BBC comments feature just seems to function as an invitation to the ignorant and cantankerous to share their ill-informed views? Anything to do with energy, the environment and especially climate change is opened up for comment, but on other subjects we don't get this. For example a story on a new health treatment isn't opened to anti-vaxxers or a story about space exploration isn't opened to moon landing fakers.

Ed
