I'm looking at having a basement. The structural engineer has done the reinforced concrete design and this includes 200mm tall kickers (these are up stands of concrete, cast at the same time as the floor, that form the start of the walls).

A number of web sites suggest that kickers should not be used. What is recommended is that the floor should be cast first and then the walls cast next, with the junction being at floor level.

Any thoughts on what is current best practice?

Ask the company that will be building it, then use a structural engineer they recommend.

http://www.basementexpert.co.uk/basement%20assistance/index.htm gives a overview of one process.

A lot comes down to how much you are depending on the concrete to stop ALL damp, you can't cast a kicker at the same time as the floor AND compact the concrete VERY well.
