There was also a bit on the BBC1 South news thursday evening - a reporter was out an about with a EWI installation team lamenting the end of the scheme. What I found interesting was they were showing the final 2 (render?) coats going on over the insulation. The last but one was a mortar colour and the final coat was a red brick colour. The installer was then removing lines of the “brick” coat to expose “mortar gaps” below. I wasn’t aware you could do this, I thought you needed brick slips if you wanted to end up with a “brick” finish. Looked a bit labour intensive but appeared to give a realistic finish.

The finish is not realistic, it looks like a fake brick garage.

Oh I don't know, some BISF houses were done near me, the effect is effective from the roadside.....
It is labour intensive, but not compared to the labour needed to attach brick-slips 'properly'...

I think it's a bit ridiculous applying a labour intensive fake brick finish to a house that wasn't brick to start with, just to reinforce the idea that brick is what a house 'should' be made of.

If we're going to build homes that are economical and efficient, people need to learn that piling lumps of stone or clay up on top of each other isn't the best way of doing it any more!
