I'm sealing this chimney flue from the room below and need to stop the rain coming in from above. What would be the easiest way to do this? There's not much left of it for any of the common cowls to attach to. It measures 195mm OD (7 and 3/4" inch).

  1.
Can you get up there and flaunch in a new mushroom pot?

Edit: The pic had not appeared when I wrote this, but it looks like you could.

Thanks, I thought the mushroom / elephant's foot etc pots all would be too large as they're made to fit inside large pots but I see Jewson sells one type that has a small diameter spigot
  2.
Do you need ventilation / air flow through the rain cap?

Probably should have a little bit, did you have something in mind that would completely seal it? I could vent it from the loft and just totally seal the thing from above. I know ideally I would just fill the whole thing with vermiculite or similar.

One thing about the mushroom pots is that I could envisage small amounts of rain running down the sides and into the flue as gaps inevitably open up in flaunching

take the existing pot off. place a slate over the hole and flaunch then cut air brick in side off chimney.

Yes - roughly what tychwarel said, and put the vent in the loft as you suggest (probably what I would do if there is not too much chimney outside the roof)

As the original pot has broken off so close the the top of the chimney, I'd seal what's left and fit a vent in the loft.
