I am looking to buy some 22mm stainless braided hoses to fit a water softener. They are £50 a pair when Screwfix do them for £5 each. I assume there is a difference in quality, but really that much. Does anyone know if there would be any other difference or why such a hefty price?

Have you checked the Screwfix ones are a different quality, maybe their web site will provide an answer? I always use Screwfix beaded hoses and never had a problem with them.

Can't see any difference except the price and the expensive ones terminate in a 90deg bend but that's not vital.

I'd guess the water softener do make a big margin on the hoses or don't buy them in a large enough volume to get a good price for them. . Buy the screw fix ones and replace if they fail.

    Who is the expensive supplier?

FWIW, my softener came with the hoses in the box. Are you sure yours doesn't?

Perhaps check the bore? Flexible pipes frequently have a much smaller bore than the equivalent copper or plastic pipe. If that's OK on the screwfix ones then I've not doubt they will be fine.

It does come with 15mm hoses but the plumber says we should have 22mm.

The expensive supplier appears to be anyone who sells Harvey (Crown) softeners!

Ah, mine came with 22mm so I suppose that's why my plumber didn't say anything!

Searching around other places I have found that the bore appears to be different. I suppose I may have to bite the bullet and get them although it pains me.

I bought some Screwfix tails with isolating valves for my bath and sink and both the 22mm bath ones failed by developing a leak at the adjusting thingy.

There is nothing worse than a leaky adjusting thingy!

Bought the bullet and got the expensive ones in the end. It hurt. A lot.
