Must say I am keen to recover all my blogs and book reviews...sadly I don'y even know how to print them or the bookmarks...maybe I should hand write them, is life too short? Knew I should've published the book version!

Hope someone picks up the mantle!

It looks like others are working on moving their blogs and advertising a new alternative web site, spotted this today http://www.ebuild.co.uk/blog/13/entry-423-moving-my-blog-to-a-new-site/

Maybe you could ask eBuild admin, as others appear to have done, for special access to move your blog.

Right click and Save Page Asâ€¦ (or whatever your browser calls it). Firefox gives various options for saving the whole page, just the HTML, text and â€œAll Filesâ€ (not explored what that means).

Whole page stores the HTML as a file then puts all the associated CSS, images, etc, in a directory with a similar name. E.g.,

For people wanting to keep threads etc in a personal archive Evernote is a good searchable platform I have used previously. There is a desktop version I have used previously.

Youc an pick up whole pages at once, and then search them in your own environment.

I once recorded the (scores iirc) of public apologies issued by Richard Dawkins to people he had impugned or misrepresented :-). Worked like a dream.

And I believe the blogs are still editable, based on the new entries which have appeared. I have not tried though.

I'm also trying to understand The Build Hub.

What is it? Who runs it?

There is content going back to 2013/14.

Out of choice I would trust a coalition of long term Ebuild members, and would be willing to put Â£500 or more into a professionally run long-term platform carefully set up.

There is an addon to Firefox called 'scrapbook' which used to make a good job of downloading pages locally. Not used it in ages though.

Plenty of ways - and tools - out there to grab a copy of your blogs or individual pages if you want them. The downside is they normally pick up any of the ads etc along with the content and you have to take a punt on how many levels of URL you want to grab.

I had to do this a while back for someone who lost access to their site (ie lost all admin passwords...) and they used HTTrack to download the site - what they didn't realise was one of the advertisers URLs went to their product pages and they downloaded about 2Gb of data from someone elses website...!

The other issue you have with downloading any of the sites - even this one - is the copyright. eBuild reiterated its Ts & Cs a couple of weeks ago and if you read them you will see that the contributors grant ebuild the licence to re-use, not anyone else. If you take a copy of the site as a reference for your own use then that is OK, if you take a copy to try and reuse the content then you breach both the initial contributors copyright and eBuilds copyright....

For the relatively small amounts of content almost all of us have on ebuild it is tidier to work from the thread / search index pages which each include the full text of approx. 25 articles, and save to eg Evernote or just Save As HTML to the local disk.

I have about 1200 articles and I could archive the whole lot including full text in a searchable form, including attachments, in about 90 minutes.

If anyone needs it, I could put a HowTo together.

For blog articles I would suggest:

1 - Save as HTML.
2 - Clip to Evernote, so you can share it in original form with others online.
3 - Save as a PDF file to be convenient for printing or attaching to emails. That could be via an option in your web browser, or your computer may have a "Print to PDF File" or "Print to DIsk" in the list of printers on your system, which will ask you for a file name before sending the article there. As a PDF you will get to keep all the comments with the article.

I run a couple of much larger forums and have emailed David via the only address I can find to ask if he would like to sell ebuild for your actual money so I can keep it running as is. No reply so far. I can understand that forum admins can become pee'd off for very good reason, though it would be nice to keep the place going.

If anyone has better contact details, or if things are getting sorted and my intervention is not required do send a whisper.

From what Jeremy has written on his blog it seems as though Ebuild will be resurrected in it's current format soon.

"I'm deeply saddened by the loss of Ebuild. it's been a part of my on-line life for eight years. Im in the process for resurrect the ebuild forum, at least all the content available as it is. I will let people know when its done, all I can say is that the least I will do is to provide it in archive mode where people can see all their posts just like they see on ebuild, hopefully someone can give a hand so we can manage it for the future, such precious information was on that forum!

Tofast4U, and in terms of attempting to distribute ebuild content, perhaps a little too fast overall.

Each person's comment and blog on eBuild is, and remains their own copyright. Before you attempt distribute (as opposed to make a copy for your own reference) think through the consequences.

I appreciate that your gesture is probably kindly meant. But not everyone will have that attitude. And the law is clear, as are the terms and conditions of the eBuild site. They are still available for you to read.

You do not own the copyright to publish that information in any format unless it is your own content.

If you choose to do so, you will breach not only the copyright of Webguides Ltd, but also the individuals who have posted there. That will most likely result in a series of cease orders which you cannot ignore.

I'm not sure if this is in ignorance of the law or blind stupidity, but taking actions like that actually threaten the future of ebuild not preserve it. If Webguides take it down because of your actions, I expect there will be a lot of pi**ed off people who would much prefer it to remain as is.

There are a lot of people who would like to buy ebuild - I suggest the admin sticks it on eBay and everyone can bid what they like but in the meantime I suggest you read the copyright statements carefully on ebuild, and take into consideration what people are helpfully trying to advise you to do.

Hey All (including ST and PeterW)

It seems I have naively "believed" that my actions would be of help, in all honesty I had no financially motivated intentions into "resurrecting" the content available on eBuild, my proposed gesture would be of preserving the content in case the site disappears overnight with no way to even going back to important information that is available. However I have simply decided not to go ahead as it seems there is a feeling of competition if there was anything available of similar nature. So I apologise if I am "stepping" into anybodys plans, and I accept that even if there is not such a thing, it would be wrong to post content that does not belong to me. I thought I would actually have support from previous members but I was wrong so ignore anything I have proposed.

I do hope eBuild is actually back, if not Im pretty sure there won't be anything similar in the future and good luck to those trying to work something out!

Whatever happens, forums don't survive this sort of outage. If it comes back it won't be the same. Which is a shame as I need some help.
