    Just spoke to Polypearl and its good value from them, £1 per cubic foot. But they can't deliver any less than 1300 cubic feet! You can collect but I like hundreds of miles away!

    AFAIK, the differences between different types of EPS beads are:

    . Fire retardant (sometimes referred to FRA - fire retardant added)

    . Density (and thus U value per bead and bead size - determined by the expansion amount) the beanbag ones are typically the equiv of EPS150 I believe?.

    . Reflective material added - all graphite based I believe ("neopor" is the BASF one, but there are alternatives) ?

    I bought a bag of graphite-enhanced EPS beads from a local cavity wall installer about 4 years ago.

    Polypearl advising me that I can buy their standard eps bead in dunelm, in the bean bag refill. The thing that worries me is density. Which is this

    In what way? Generally the higher density beads have higher insulation value (up to about 45 kg/m³, then it starts to drop off again). Low density white beads are about 0.040 W/m·K generally.

    The graphite enhanced stuff has pretty constant insulation value even at low densities - a quick google seems to give about around 0.031 W/m·K as fused blocks, and about 0.033 W/m·K as loose beads (smaller voids in the fused form gets better U values).

    What are you planning to use it for?

    BTW, I'm planning to use some graphite enhanced EPS beads shortly to upgrade a sliding door threshold - with the beads in the PVC sill cavities, plus a couple of bits of XPS or PIR under the glazing unit, and aluminium cover plate the Uf for the sill section goes from 1.28 W/m²·K to 1.06 W/m²·K, which I think is probably worth the 10 minutes of fiddle to get them in...

    Hi Tim

    What I meant to say was basically buying some sort of sub par eps bead which has an inferior u value.

    They are to fill about a brick width from floor to ceiling cavity which has been extended to reduce the size of window opening. The cavity has previously been full filled with injected eps beads. Therefore my plan, once the cavity closer is in, is to just pour the eps beads into that area to ensure they fill it up nicely (in a way that no batt product could because inevitably the old edge of eps insulation is not straight as some fell out etc as we toothed out the brick work in order to extend the brick work

    As a general rule, if the diameter is the same, then the U value is probably the same too (assuming the original unexpanded beads started the same size). The smaller ones probably have a slightly better U value, but probably only by about 10%.
