    Good morning all,

    I'm now on the verge of pouring my footings and I'd just like to check a couple of things with you all if I may.

    The first being rebar within the footings, I'm building on solid chalk, 450mm wide by 450mm in depth and my understanding is 2 runs of 12mm diameter, one at least 75mm from the bottom and another at least 75MM from the top, does this sound right to you?

    The next question is a bit more detailed so I've attached a drawing. As I've referenced in previous discussions, the ground floor will be 140mm single skin but it is my understanding that I'll need some form of pier or lateral support along the long wall. Do you think my 190x440 pier and 140mm blockwork around the openings will be sufficient or will these need beefing up further? Is there anything you would do differently?

    This is being run by a structural engineer but he's dragging his feet a little and I'd like a head start on my proposed design just to help speed things up.

    Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!

    The 140x 440 blockwork pier between the window and the door seems too small to me,

    I can’t see why you couldn’t try to do without the pier in the long wall by arguing that the roof is stabilising the wall.

    If you do keep it then I would make it slightly bigger 250 (140 + 10 + 100) x 440

    Hi Tony, thanks for the reply!

    So you think building a pier between the window and the back door 215x440 block would be the better solution? Makes sense to me!

    Ideally I would be able to do away with the pier on the long wall all together maybe with the addition of a 'spine' windpost to aid in the lateral support?

    Yes, and do you mean lateral support?

    What blocks are you using, hopefully not aircrete

    140 blocks mane a pretty strong wall and if it were only 100 blocks I would do two piers on the long wall, none with the thicker blocks.

    Stick with an engineer, I am only very experienced and very practical, I would not ask a fabricator without a spec.

    Thanks and yes I did, corrected now :)

    I've added the 215 pier between the window and door as per your suggestion and included a windpost in the design although as you say, this specification will be left to the engineer.

    I've also beefed up the piers either side of the garage door opening just in case the wife ever wants to put her car in there and the inevitable happens ;)

    There may be a minimum return on the corner next the window without calcs likely 440mm

    Engineer might be happy with 325?

    In the drawing it's 440 just for ease of building but I appreciate the heads up!
