    Hi all,

    Umming and ahhing over my roof - was going to use something reclaimed locally but not much around that will compliment the untreated waney edge cladding with a pitched roof. Building is 3m x 5m.

    Leaning towards timber shingles - have seen a few posts on here that suggest that its important to source them correctly if choosing cedar. I've seen larch suggested also. Does anyone recommend one species over another and also can anyone suggest any good suppliers? I'm in Durham; one suggestion is Robert Duncan at Gateshead; I've got a self build account with Jewson too but presumably these will have a choice that limited to the bigger producers.

    Also, since I'm going to sheath the walls with OSB, is it worth putting a layer on the roof too as a sarking board and to give a bit more strength - I know I'll have to still use battens but it might also reduce the chances of me falling off (a bit)... In fact, apart from the cost, I suppose my query here is there a down side to it?

    Not built yet but 30 degrees as planned.

    OK then cedar shingles, triple leaped and nailed with bronze tacks. Never walk on it and it will last 80 years

    I would definitely want battens as it is crucial that air can circulate under the shingles to keep then bone dry i.e. don’t fix directly to OSB
