We just had a drama (long story) with the flue of the oil boiler in our rented 70s bungalow, which resulted in sooty smoke entering the loft.

This has revealed a number of air leaks from the loft to/from the living rooms, indicated by sooty marks around the leak. Pics attached, hopefully it will show up, showing electrical fittings, loft hatch, cracks behind coving.

I had previously sealed all the air leaks I could find myself, as the landlord was disinterested, but I hadn't detected these ones.

Can't say I recommend this method of smoke testing! But does show that however hard you try to seal the house, leaks will appear that cannot be detected 'by feel' without testing.

Kind of an 'extreme' version of a smoke pencil, I suppose :)
