I have a well insulated mid terrace 3 story home, with irregular occupancy.
Single zone heating system, currently just on manual timer, but wanting to install some kind of 'cleaver' system pre winter.
New Baxo duotec 33es - not 'OpenTherm'

About 10 rads, - all with compatable TRV controllers and I budgeted for smart rad valves.
Many options, Honeywell, Drayton, Tado etc

Really like the idea of control via App, so can tweak heating when in or out for comfort & savings.

Any experience with any systems or advice.

    Many thanks

Hive or nest then, programmable room thermostat. Long time since I had a heating system, I now use Loxone for house controls and that would do it.

What ever system you use I would check if it uses modulation of the boiler as I understand it most of these external controllers do not.

The likes of Hive and Nest just switch the boiler on and off unless the boiler is opentherm compatible.

I had a new Vailant installed recently and the only real option was to use Vaillant's own weather compensating controls as the boiler was not opentherm compatible.

I have Heat Genius and I can answer any questions you have about it. My general feeling is it would be overkill for a 3 bed place.

TBH I kinda wish I hadn't bothered - the right solution is insulating properly, and just using TRVs. If you have "cold rooms" you're just storing up other problems.

Ahem, I have a view on that. Do whatever you like for the central stat but then fit Radbots as an upgrade to normal TRVs (at about 2 minutes per device, no tools, wiring, programming, Internet, etc), for better temperature regulation and target ~30% energy savings. We're in this for the ~0.1t+ CO2e saved per rad per year, not yachts for the management team! I won't post a URL...

We have used a nest and I found it easy to install, and it has some very clever features. Motion detection so it reverts to "away" temperature when it does not detect anybody for 1 hour; self-learning algorithm to estimate time to bring house up to temperature without overshoot (even with our old back boiler), taking into account outside temperature; remote control through app; and opportunity to log data from the built-in temperature and humidity sensor to a google sheet, amongst others.
After upgrading to a modern boiler with weather comp, the Nest now serves as a simple thermostat for the upstairs zone valve.

    DamonH,
thanks, I like the idea of RadBots, - somr days my daughters stay, others not.
Some days I am about all day, others I just return at midnight and only want a bedroom to be off the chill for a few mins.
Always best to sleep in a cold room, but wake up to it warm, then bedroom can be off again all day.
    radBots = single room zoning.
I have done as much insulating as I can - over 150mm kingspan in roof, plus treble glazed and draftproofing, got passive stack vents x 5 with manual controlls, now wish to heat eficiently.
Do NOT want whole house control, need room by room, hour by hour, day by day.
    Any suggesions?

You want soft or hard zoning, such as (as above) Heat Genius, EvoHome etc.

As I said, your perfect idea of control doesn't necessarily play out - if your room is cold for a period it means condensation on surfaces if humidity is rising elsewhere in the house. Not obvious initially, but over a few years you might notice it. It depends what "cold" means - but I'd be wary of letting a room drop below 15C (still not a hard and fast rule because it depends on individual surfaces).

15C is a sensible minimum, but surely with 'RadBots' - that is easily set up?
    Question is, - WHICH ?

If you put Radbot on low (not frost) then it will not let the temperature drop below about 14C if relative humidity is high. That is to try to reduce the risk of condensation.

I like their products, bit expensive and there are mainstream alternatives. I have no use for them as I don’t have a heating system.

No sorry. I was trying to find a network (WiFi, Zigbee etc) controllable TRV with a remote thermostat for my UFH manifold. What I wanted to do was vary the temperature of the water flow so I could heat the floor up quicker then leave it running at a lower temperature to avoid overheating.

I contacted their support and they were quite helpful, but couldn't do what I asked.
