    Hi

Just about to start the fire for the winter in new old bungalow - noticed protruding rope in surround, and some suspect possible asbestos board up in chimney...

Likely going to get a sample and get it tested... but what do you all think? Might be hard to get a sample for the upper chimney part (but it being more solid material, would it be an issue if the fire was lit?)

Picture 1 - this is the view looking up toward chimney - not the 2 thinner boards on right hand side which is facing out into the room, potential asbestos boards?
Pictures 2&3 - left hand side of surround - not the rope appears a different texture towards bottom
Pictures 4&5 - right hand side of surround

If you think it is azzy, dont disturb it until using the method recommended in your testing kit. I just sent off some samples of artex, 10 for £100. Artisan surveyors I used, good prices, others are available though. Or obviously get someone out to you if you dont fancy it.

I think that it is more likely glass fibre rope but proceed with caution

Off the record advice is to wet it down wearing a good mask, carefully extract it, double bag it all and after testing decide on what to do,

Here I can arrange in advance as a householder to table to recycling centre nqa

Agreed, when wetting it down use a washing up liquid solution or similar
