    After a last minute wobble on the price of foamed glass aggregate to fill my subfloors, noticed comments around the forum on EPS.

    It could tick the boxes, relatively vapour permeable, good compressive strength, U-values etc, my question is:

    As I have 700-800mm to fill, what would be a maximum thickness of EPS, along with a limecrete screed (100mm ish)?

    The less hardcore in, the better, around 150mm tops.

    Dont think id be keen sticking more than 300-400mm EPS in.
    perhaps others may disagree.
    crush concretes pretty cheap , you just have to shift It !

    So long as base is flat and reasonably level I can’t see a problem, flat is way more important than level

    Thanks James and Tony, I wonder if I'd get away with 150 -200m hardcore, 4-450mm eps and 100mm lime screed with ufh. As flat and level as possible then..

    I'm no expert and no disrespect to James or Tony but I would check with somebody (an engineer I suppose but maybe there are others also suitably qualified) as regards the depth of limecrete and whether and how much and what type of reinforcement to use in the limecrete. I'd be nervous about just 100 mm with no reinforcement but it does depend on what you're going to put on top of it. Also what grade of EPS sheets to use.

    FWIW, I've got 400 mm of EPS under our house and AFAIK there's no reason we couldn't have had more.

    Thank you djh, I guess the limecrete/glass system is a recognised one, not so much the mix of limecrete and eps. I may get it checked out if I dont do the more expensive option.

    By 'foamed glass aggregate' we assume you mean a product similar to Veriso which we have used and needs compacting every 300mm depth to consolidate. The expanded glass bead alternative to Veriso we have is available at a price for a finite quantity which may not be as prohibitive as you might think.

    The fire proof, constant insulation value of the glass bead in comparison with EPS which we think of as a spongy packaging material prone to insect attack and with flame retardancy only does not seem to be worth the slightly improved lambda value to us.

    The 4-8mm beads are pourable and can be raked level without requiring compacting and have good compressive strength. If a solid finish is required, the last few inches can be used as aggregate to form the Limecrete.

    Oh ok, how much you selling it for? Not heard much about those being used as an aggregate.

    As we have mentioned in previous posts - we are not advertising or promoting 'our' product; we simply have residual material from our self-build. We believe the product to be an good alternative to many underfloor insulation products available with many advantages.

    We have around 30m3 and no more availability from us.

    Several floor screeding companies we contacted for our build had used such a product in Limecrete previously and were entirely happy to use this product.
