Tape a small tripod to the side of any long stick?

But how to control the camera? Some kind of powered gimbal, remote viewing of what the camera is seeing, and remote shutter. Very difficult to do by trial and error. Don't even think of setting time-delay on the shutter before hoisting it.

    What about using a drone?

Well if it's a real camera rather than a mobile it may be possible to use a remote shutter release cable. I believe there are wireless ones nowadays, and of course you can view images wirelessly as well with the right gear.

I was just going to set my phone or gopro to record and film the roof...

Surely the only way to go these days. Not sure what licenses if any are needed but some of the drone roof surveys I have seen have been first class.

Just ordered up some telescopic aluminium poles and a few fixings to make my own. Cost £70 in parts compared to £300 the cheapest I could find

Perhaps a cherry picker would have been a good choice particularly if you had other work you could have done with it. e.g cleaning the gutters. About £120 a day for a 12M working height trailer type.
