    Tried a quick search but don't think this has been covered.

    Barn Conversion - 450mm thick stone walls, IWI with 100mm PIR insulation going in.

    I need to put some internal walls in to divide off the downstairs Toilet and Utility/Plant room, I was thinking these would be good in 100mm concrete block, to provide better sound deadening and so that they can provide some additional support to first floor joists (might help with awkward staircase design).

    What sort of detail would folks use where these walls join the external stone walls? Would you normally expect wall starter/butterfly ties into the stone walls to add stability to the blockwork?
    I'm thinking the IWI should continue past the end of the walls to avoid a cold bridge?

    Would you use a denser insulating product such as Compacfoam and fix through it to the stone?

    Any thoughts gratefully received. (e.g. just build timber stud walls, easier to run pipes and cables etc. anyway!)

    Def run the IWI through continuous and build the partitions up to it. That layout looks reasonably stable, well enough braced by nearby right angles, to not fall over sideways, assuming there's a lintol/spandril over the shower room doorway.

    Shd be more worried by where the extg thick internal wall (with 'cupboard') interrupts the IWI - massive cold bridge/condensation/mould creator - in the kitchen and all.

    In general, a fine example of the shortcomings of IWI!

    I think we can IWI around that thick bit of wall and cupboard, now that the exterior door is fitted there seems to be space for insulation. the cupboard was the way through from the 2 storey bit to the single storey bit (kitchen). the new way through is at the other end - where there is also a massive cold bridge! we can probably IWI that end as well.

    The next place we do will be externally insulated!

    Do you think we need to fix through the IWI at the ends of the walls with a wall starter kit or is that overkill?

    Yes they probably can. That wall will be IWI upstairs anyway in the 2 storey bit, I was thinking the middle bit downstairs won't need it because the cupboard (which was the old doorway) and the new doorway at the other end means that that bit of wall is not touching the exterior walls. although the small areas above the lintels each side will be. As well as the triangle of gable end above the lintels (the kitchen is vaulted ceiling) so it might we worth insulating it anyway.
    My main question was whether anyone had a clever detail for the ends of the new blockwork walls (lined in red on the drawing) so that I can fix through the IWI e.g. some sort of super duper wall starter kit that I haven't found online yet or if anyone had come across it before? perhaps not.

    you could get some thermally broken fixings like these~:

    expensive though. You could fix a starter kit on top of the insulation through to the wall and go from there.
    But as Tom says the layout of the walls is probably enough without any fixings to the wall.
    What about a combination of Compacfoam and a few holes with Teplo (Basalt) ties? Look in the Offers and Wants section and you might even find someone on here has a few left (In fact if you only need a few a colleague of mine may have some left over from when we used them a couple of years ago in a retrofit. Let me know if you want me to ask.
    Thanks for the ideas. I might go for a wall starter kit fixed through the insulation because the walls will be giving some support to the kite winder on that side and I want it all to be secure.
