This week on Grand designs house awards, there will be an eco build category on may 8th. Our 2 storey straw bale house which has been discussed on the forum will feature. For more info about it you can visit www.quietearth.org.uk or granddesignsawards.com . It embraces a low impact and sustainable way of living. If you wish to support this project, please feel free to vote on the night for it.... channel 4, 9-10pm. Thank you!

Why do Grand designs think this is a good eco-build?

Well done Rachel, your place looks fantastic, congratulations on winning your category, I was very surprised that you didn't win the house of the year though. You deserved to by a long way in my opinion!

Thank you so much everyone! After such a journey of this build ... it has been amazing to receive such positive feedback. We did our best. Also, it seemed to win by a large majority which was also incredible since S4C the welsh channel 4 did not show it live, so many of the welsh population couldnt vote. Many in my village went to watch it in the pub on Sky. There is more info on my website about the build www.quietearth.org.uk I don't feel so alone with this anymore and am committed to helping those with similar projects. This award went to all those who tread lightly on the earth.

just to answer your query jon, the straw bale has a u value of 0.13 = highly insulating. Roof insulated with thermafleece, floor with Leca and thermafleece. Plaster is lime and clay. A very low embodied energy house, using mostly natural materials. Double and triple glazed windows. An off grid system with solar pv, wind generator and solar thermal. The whole 2 1/2 storeys are heated by one woodburner using coppiced wood from my woodland. Water- on mains for drinking, but rainwater harvesting the rest. All waste composted on site through an aquatron system. Local larch and oak, untreated. Organic veg garden.
