    Looking for a racking system for a unit I'm hiring. What are people using? I was thinking of getting hold of some scaffolding and planks and knocking something up?

    Open to ideas....

    The garage is block wall, could timber make a good system? If so, what size timber? There will be a fair amount of weight being stored. Dehumidifiers, tools etc.

    I use 2x2 frame, Posts at 1200c/c, 2x1 batten on wall. Rebate front rails to take 18mm OSB shelves

    I've had a price back from a scaffolder

    6m long, 600mm depth of shelves, 2.8m high, fully boarded with scaffold boards £550 supply and fitte

    Sounds quite reasonable to me as I can always take down and sell on or reassemble elsewhere if required

    Some of that stuff is pretty basic/thin metal and most suppliers seem to have replaced plywood with thin MDF.

    My advice would be to try some local auctions to see if you can find better quality industrial grade shelving second hand. The sort BnQ use in their store not sell in their store ;-)

    Costco have some heavy duty industrial shelving.

    Actually picked up the same spec. shelving as the machinemart ones for £26 delivered (1800 x 900 x 600)

    Will see how it is, if it's any good I'll buy the longer section shelves

    Tony, is there some form of calculator that could tell me the strength of timber shelving?

    The ones I have bought are 175kg per shelf (900 wide x 600 deep) seems plenty for what I need it for (I think!)

    The unit arrived, straight forward to put together. Feels a little bit flimsy but it does have a 175kg weight limit per shelf and I sat on it and it feels quite sturdy.

    This one was £26 and in think for the size it's a decent price. Even if I were to get wood save build it in reckon it'd be around the same price.

    I bought some garage shelving about two months ago. I was very pleased with it, however I noticed a few days ago whilst moving neatly organised pots of paint around that the bottom shelves now have about 5mm of mould all across them!

    I have the standard MDF sheeting for the shelving units. I’ve looked it up and it’s a known problem of MDF being a moisture magnet and getting mouldy.

    As most garages and storage units aren’t built with adequate ventilation in mind just be warned if neatly stacking everything on the lower shelves, especially in corner units like mine and restricting the airflow.

    Painting the MDF first can help apparently, or just use Ply instead.

    I had the same racking as above, and had the same issue of mould after a while.
    Treated, cleaned, sanded, then zinsser bin and some decent acrylic paint (aerosols, its what I had spare/to hand) and its been fine ever since.

    If you buy anything like that, treat the wood in some way to protect it.
