    The slate battens (normally) sit ontop of the rafters, so the pipework could be fed behind the slates. The pipes have to run horizontally (with a slight fall), aligning with the horiz battens, so contact can be maintained with the slates. Add the ali spreader plates after, if you wish, maintaining that slight slope, enabling drain back.

    Now this is off the wall a little bit but... the heat may not be due to just radiation.

    I read somewhere that a reverse stack takes place on hot days which draws the hot layers of air from just underneath slates and tiles into the living space.

    The logic goes like this:
    As the day heats up the outside becomes hotter than the inside and the inside air becomes a little denser than the outside air. As a result the internal cool air "pours" out of the building at the bottom of the house due either to a poor air barrier or open doors an windows. With replacement air coming through the loft/roof space.

    I'm not 100% convinced on this logic - I think the main problem is usually that the effective temperature of the roof is much greater than the outside temperature indicates due to solar radiation. But good airtightness under the roof could be worth a consideration to prevent dragging in super heated air.

    Thanks again everyone - am v busy just noiw, will respond to these wise and imaginative contributions asap.
    Just to add my two penneth - if the building is Listed then PV or Solar Thermal panels over the slates on top of the roof probably won't get permission.

    (edit - just noticed that P-i-H has already pointed this out.)
