Need to illuminate staircase steps by fitting LED luminares under the step behind a plinth/pelmet which been put on the step of an open tread stairs to close gap to 100 mm. Ideally a strip LED, got 20 mm recess to conceal it . Could do with auto switching i.e as someone gets on staircase light come on and when step off go off but not essential. Anyone done such job and can suggest make so many variants around?

Weve got leds set into one of the strings with an led for each step. I routered a slot in the top of the string to carry a 2 core cable and the spindle baserail covers the cable/slot. Drilled a hole in the side of the string for each led and a smaller hole from the cable slot to the back of the led hole to carry the leds integral cable. Soldered each leds cable to the 2 core cable and connected the PSU to the 2 core cable.

I used a kit of plinth/skirting leds that I think screwfix sell?? Light the treads beautifully without causing any glare or excess light in the room they run out of😁

Ours are manually switched but you could rig a PIR to auto switch the power to the PSU.

Cut the tape to required lengths, say 900mm per tread, and solder the tape to 2 core tails (daisy chained), run up the stringer similar Philedge above. Check the transformer power required versus your choice of LED tape. Might need to go for 2 transformers, as something sticks in my mind about a limit to the length of tape you can feed (maybe a max current the LED's can see??). Can't recall exactly. I did this a few years ago for the underside of kitchen work surfaces.

Ceiling/wall mounted occupancy sensors (foot and head of stair) can do the switching. Discrete unit like this maybe??

https://www.cef.co.uk/catalogue/products/1929951-250w-flush-ceiling-mount-pir-sensor?gclid=CjwKCAiA57D_BRAZEiwAZcfCxZA_fukkPTgm9j_IBi9IpGUyNf21q8L8rYfFsZ543ls6YbuJb7UBvhoCADYQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Bet you could buy all the bits for £150.
