General: "Green bonds" announced in the budget

    It'll be interesting to see the details of this.

    £15bn in green bonds, including for retail investors, to help finance the transition to net zero by 2050.

    Have to wait until June to see!

    2.144 Green Gilt – The government will issue its first sovereign green bond – or green gilt
    – this summer, with a further issuance to follow later in 2021.... the green gilt framework, to be published in June.... The government
    will offer a green retail savings product through NS&I in the summer of 2021.

    2.150 Energy Innovation... the launch of a new £68 million UK-wide competition to implement several first-of-a-kind
    energy storage prototypes or technology demonstrators

    I see there is also to be a £4 million UK-wide competition for the first phase of a biomass feedstocks programme, to support the rural economy in making improvements to the production of green energy crops and forestry products. (also to be found in section 2.150).

    Also some money for floating wind turbines. But I doubt £4m will go very far to change the existing UK biomass industry, what can you do with that much, perhaps some adverts?

    The energy storage competition caught my eye because they called it energy not electricity. Maybe relevant to green building, if someone proposes heat storage in houses?

    It does say that the £4 million is the first phase, so presumably more to follow? I think there could be interest down here in west Wales where there is already work being done on growing miscanthus (elephant grass).
