    What ho one and all,

Will be replacing a wash basin that for some reason, the glaze has started to craze.

Using the existing mono-block tap, is there usually a washer between the tap and the basin? There was not when I original installed it, but given that the drain plug has a washer / gasket to 'soften' the metal / ceramic contact area, seems to me that there should be.

    Thanks and toodle pip

Some monoblocs have a narrow recess in the base into which partially fits an "O" ring, which compresses against the porcelain when tightened. Others have a large rubber or silicone washers which again compresses. Various sized such washers are available to buy loose.

Thanks; do not recall seeing a recess with O ring but it was over ten years ago. Will see when I remove the basin.

We have two sinks that have got the same problem with crazing around the plughole. Again no soft washers are supplied with the manufactures fittings so metal on ceramic. We just live with it as it's not getting any worse

Given all the other bits and bobs that are supplied, I am surprised that a nylon washer is not part of the kit with every tap. My bath tap came with a black rubber washer/gasket, presumably so as not to damage the acrylic bath. I amy have a look at cutting one as I do have a scalpel blade based hole cutting tool. having said hat, I have also not had a problem; it just seems a strange omission.
  1.
I replaced a basin tap today, the cheapy new one came with a rubber gasket which was labelled "anti rotation washer" on the list of parts.

It also came with a plastic back nut, to avoid risk of overtightening that could craze the sink. However it was made 0.5mm too big to fit in my spanners, so I reused the old brass one.

I was pleasantly surprised that the isolation valve worked, but unpleasantly surprised that it was built into the flexible tail, which I was replacing. So house main water supply was turned off as usual.

It didn't come with an aerator insert to restrict the water flow rate, so I shall have to get one separately.
