Q: where is the air leak around this kitchen window?

A: follow the trail of ants! From the kitchen worktop, up the window frame to a little crack in the top of the frame. Block it and repeat next week with another crack, until all the gaps are filled inside and outside.

These highly skilled gap finders have done their work here, so if anyone would like to have a go, you are welcome to collect them.

Ants aren't allowed in our house. SWMBO wipes every surface and covers all food to minimise the attraction, and we don't do holes. Ditto flies, but the occasional spider is tolerated.

How do you calibrate the results? ach? (ants counted hourly)

Ants counted yearly would be more meaningful. Results would normally be 0 and occasionally 1 or even 2.

    Ecosystems 101:
If you can see spiders in your home, then either:

    A) there are also flies for them to eat and holes for them to arrive through,
    or
    B) you see imaginary spiders!

If you follow your imaginary spider, it will eventually lead you to flies and holes. But it's easier to follow ants. They are amazing creatures, much more businesslike about things!

Ecosystems 102 - our house doesn't behave like that. Think again about the possible mechanisms.

Yes, but if we take the average per annum as 1.5 then you can say you have an 'ach' score that my calculator cannot even display! (1.5/365/24, I think, but I did get an E 2nd time round in Maths O level!)

Indeed, ants per year is a lot more easy to understand and write down

FWIW, ants usually come in on somebody's clothes, or on the cat's fur. Difficult to know after they have succeeded; most die trying. Flies occasionally make it through an open door but very rarely. Usually they sneak in on a plant brought into the conservatory/sun room. Spiders use either mechanism.
