Dear cat lovers on the GBF

looking at the cat flap designs I shudder at their poor energy efficiency.

Has anybody found any cat flaps that work well with an insulated airtight house with an MVHR?

Or maybe someone managed to find a good workaround?

I'd love to hear your experience with cats and insulation!

Best one I have ever seen is this one https://www.thepetflap.com/, it gets a mention in my book, it can’t blow open in the wind!

I have seen a tunnel through a wall with a cat flap both ends forming an airlock like a porch

Yes, they're terrible. Neighbours have a Petflap and it's definitely airtight. However, the big potential issue is that it has no lock so theres nothing to stop other animals coming in through it as well as your cats.

We ended up just fitting a Catmate but, because triple glazing/large sliding door ended up putting it through a wall section rather than a window so ended up with a very long tunnel. It's definitely not airtight - the lock means it's not going to blow open but you are relying just on a brush seal and it's a single piece of plastic. I reckon a two flap airlock is probably the best solution if you need one that locks - or into some intermediate space like a garage before going outside.

Last time, fitted it in the wall adjacent instead of cutting the door. Made a tunnel thro the wall with 1/2” ply, fitted a catflap at both ends, the old fashioned Staywell type with 2-part door, main flap (opening only outward) within a hinged 'picture frame' (which opens only inward), both magnetically 'catched'. So both doors, each swinging only one way, close against a full rebate, instead of a single door swinging both ways with passing brush seal.

Just looked online, it may be this

We have two cat flaps. The inner one is mounted in our house wall and is an airtight one from Freedom Pet Pass in Canada. It works well but is a little bit stiff for cats to use, so they can be reluctant sometimes. Outside that cat flap is a space we call the 'bin store' which is just an enclosed area built without insulation and used for mostly food storage. In its outer wall there is a second cat flap, which is a conventional transparent cat flap with microchip sensor. It prevents neighbourhood cats getting in and our cats like to sit just inside it looking out.

Yes, we chose it for that reason, and the price was a lot more sensible than the PH-certified Austrian jobbie.

Sorry, Dave, but why not? Actually someone PMd me to ask for a fresh link to the product I recommended above, and having found one added it to the Knowledge Bank for benefit of all.

Thanks for the explanation, Tom. It just seemed rather odd, appearing over a year after the last post, with no explanation. I'm not sure what that product has to recommend it particularly though.

Right, so just poor air-sealing instead of awful?

It was (and prob still is) a lot better, one could feel, and cheaper, than the 2-way passing brush seal traps (AFAIKnew) then becoming 'standard' (I was surprised the door-within-door one still seems available). And as a pair in series, I assumed better still. Maybe the 'stiff' Pet-pass one is better - but two of em in series??

Eco Pet flap works incredibly well for cats and small dogs, can’t blow open in the wind seals nicely yet a slight nudge from a nose and it opens.

You do it for your pets if you like, most people let them do it for themselves
