I'd be happy to host a replacement forum for free - I have servers kicking around doing nothing (well, their graphics cards are folding proteins) and gigabit internet that's generally highly reliable. I develop software for a living so I dare say that transferring the forum content isn't insurmountable. Even hosting on a service like Azure or the people that do my web hosting would cost very little, less than discourse (not a fan of their forum style, personally) so if people wanted to stick with Vanilla it could be done.. something a bit more high tech that could, er, post images etc might be nice

Thanks cjard. I think we need to hear from Keith. Tony, have you heard from Keith? I haven't. Nick

I am keen to help and willing to contribute

Got an e-mail from Keith last night:

''I will try my best to rescue the Green Building Forum as I close down the rest of the services that I provide later this year so hopefully there will be nothing to worry about and things will continue, but in a slimmer and more streamlined fashion. I’ll keep you and the forum posted on progress as it happens.''

Many thanks from me, Keith, and I am sure that will be echoed by all the active Forum members.

Such a shame to hear this, I first came here when I purchased my house and I appreciated all the advice I received. I'm definitely on board with whatever replaces GBF.

Does that mean it would continue under Keith's 'umbrella', tho perhaps more like an Indiana Jones hat?

Fantastic everyone's so on for it. I'd gladly pay a modest up-front or recurring subscription.

''Does that mean it would continue under Keith's 'umbrella'?''

I can only assume so. The quote contains everything he wrote. It's good news anyway!

Wouldn't a more sustainable long term solution be one where the operation wasn't reliant on one person who isn't an active participant in the forum?
  4.
Arguably yes, but it is Keith's forum. It would be good, if Keith 'secures its future', to be able to discuss some sort of collaborative management structure which stops all the load being on one person.

It is noticeable that Edge is starting to complain quite vigorously about the site not using HTTPS. I have a NAS drive that I can no longer access as Edge thinks it is a dangerous site.

Eventually, unless this gets moved to a new base software, it will die as no one will be able to access it.

That's so sad to hear! But as the others mentioned, thanks for all you service Keith, it is really appreciated.

We have so much information here that it would be a shame to lose, so I am also up for helping to maintain the forum. I am a software engineer who doesn't particularly work with forums, but am happy to jump in so we don't lose this precious information we built over so long.

I am unable to help as I know nothing about software but it would be a great pity to see the forum go. As others have said, the simple layout without 'c**p' popping up is wonderful.

And everyone has been a mine of information and assistance over the years.

Hope a way forward can be found.

    Hey folks

Just wondered if there are any updates on this? Both on the forum as a whole, and also - if it is not to continue - whether the content will be available in some kind of archive format?

    Many thanks

Just a thought, but if the forum is closing and there is no alternative in place, could the community not just move to something existing like Reddit?

Obviously it wouldn't be possible to move the archive there and that is a separate issue, but its fairly easy to set up a sub on Reddit and I think it can be made private/invitation only, or restrict posting to members of the sub - if the concern was that an open forum might be overrun with the madness of the internet going public! It has all the advantages of a modern forum, like notifications, easily pasting in pictures links, quotes etc.

A password could be posted on this forum to verify that people are coming from here, and for new members its just a case of having a policy on how to admit.

I think everybody's waiting to hear from Keith what he's managed to put together before we spend too much time worrying about alternatives. He said he'd let us know when he had something.

Why is it so hard to log into this forum, what am I doing wrong?
  7.
It's very old s/ware and the forum may, as you'll have read, be closing soon. We hope not,. and we're hoping to work with Keith, the owner to be able to keep it going. Keep trying and stick with it. It is easier on some browsers than others.

Just to prove the point I needed 2 tries to post that!!
  9.
I really think the best way forward is a move en masse to an alternative, already existing forum, as has been suggested a few times.

This thread will continue to get a scattering of comments every few months while we wait in vain to hear about plans, and the forum will die in the meantime.
