The old element was really jammed into the brass collar but the new one doesn't sit all the way. It looks like it needs to be pressed into place. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a) do I need to push it home, and b) how can I do that without damaging the element ?
Also should I replace the o ring on the brass collar at the same time?

Whenever I take stuff apart that has been in place for some years and will not be disturbed for years again then I replace any rubber bits as a matter of course.
