We propose to use high performance timber windows with external aluminium cladding on our new build project. Has anyone used Internorm windows and if so did they manage to negotiate a reasonable price and are they happy with the windows' performance?

No experience with them, but looked at them earlier this year. Problems for us were that they are all internal opening only. Have you considered Velfac? Not quite the same since the entire outer sash is aluminium, but they do offer a broader range.

We're going to be meeting up with a guy from Rawington windows next week (http://www.rawington.com/ - though the site is out of date and does not show their current product range) They do timber frame with aluminium cladding, and their prices seem distinctly better than Velfac and a mile away from the Green Building Store. When we've seen them, I'll update about quality.

We asked internorm to quote, but have heard nothing from them.

A quick question - if you talk about £/sqm for windows, I assume that includes the frame, rather than just glazed area?

Rawington turned up with a perfectly decent window at a very good price. It's engineered pine with alu-cladding, achieving a U-value of 1.3. The only thing I would wonder about is the finger joints on the interior surface - they're seamless, but obviously the change in grain makes them visible. For a little extra they can add a veneer surface to hide that. Would be interested to see how the other companies approach that issue.

Tuna - did you go for the Rawington windows in the end?

I too just got a quote from them which seemed pretty reasonable (less than half of the price quoted by Velfac).

Let me know if you decided to go ahead.

We've got all of the quotes in now, but have to clarify a few points with various people before we make our decision. We bought Internorm windows (3 & 4g) about 6 months ago. We're rather preoccupied with actually building the house, so we didn't really do much research, but they were the only brand listed on the Passive House site that seemed easy to buy. The build quality seems excellent, and they've got a huge range of options available. The Edition 4 ones with a built in blind are brilliant (IMHO!) We haven't got any heating installed yet, so not really sure about the performance, but it's never colder near the windows, despite the cold spell.
Sorry that this probably isn't any real help, but not sure how to evaluate a window!
