    Hi Can anyone help me?
I have a 1.5 kw 38 volt small scale wind turbine, thinking of mounting on end of the un-used gable of my outbuildings, the turbine has 3 wires and im not sure what else i require to setup a small grid connect system?
has anyone already done this type of turbine setup and willing to help me? many thanx John

be careful (rethink location?) as it will shake the wall to bits sooner or later sooner for an old wall

If you are in England you need an installer qualified to install it.

    Hi Fisher,

Tony is absolutely right. Locating a turbine on a gable end will possibly result in structural issues and the turbulence from your building will seriously affect the turbines performance so much so that I can guarantee you'll be disappointed with the results.

I would recommend you consider positioning the turbine in an location with a relatively open path from the South West ( If your not in the UK take a look at www.windfinder.com and see where your prevailing winds are coming from) and depending upon your engineering skills either manufacture a simple mast yourself or have one made.

From there you will require a control unit to suit the turbine and then if you want a grid connected set up you'll need a small inverter. It won't be cheap I'm afraid as there are a number of other bits and pieces like Isolators, breakers, a meter to name but a few.
When you take into account what's needed to get up and running you may well find such a small turbine is simply not viable, but allot will depend on how much you can do yourself and how cheaply you can source the components.

    Kind regards

    Paul

ok thanx guys the wall should be ok its 5ft thick stone and has been ther a long time but looks in good condition,as for siteing its very open with a height of 978 ft above sea level and a open plane each side of 20-30 miles no obstructions.?
Does the invertor accept the direct three wire connection or do i need other equipment....ive looked at istallation legislation and found nothing stating I require certified installer except for the final grid connection?

In order to connect to the grid the entire system has to be certified as being G83/1 compliant.

    Assuming you live in Endland...

Any electrical work outdoors (except plugging together equipment fitted with pre-wired plugs and sockets by the manufacturer) either has to be done by a Part P qualified person or you have to make a Building Control Application.

So plugging together some garden lights that come prewired with plugs and sockets is ok. Wiring up garden lights using your own cable, wire strippers etc is not allowed unless you make a BCA.

So has your mill just got bare wires or does it have a waterproof plug on the end designed to mate with a matching socket on the makers inverter/control box?

I think the problem is that the roof will cause a great deal of turbulence around the turbine, reducing its output dramatically. Even if it's on the windward side of the building, there will be a lot of air hitting the wall below it, eddying about and moving upwards to flow over and around the building. If you were able to position it upwind of the buildings (for the prevailing wind direction), on a pole, as far away as possible, you'd get much more power out of the same turbine.

Hi thanx for the comments,The turbine is a unwired turbine with just a 3 wire connection, all the items are going to be g83 certified(But G83 certification is nothing to do with the turbine but the quality of electric fed back to grid) My brother is Part p registered and i usually work on central heating electrics as I am a corgi registered and oftec registered heating engineer working for a boiler manufacture(one of the best ones,or the best as I believe)!!!).
Also my belief with part p was that I can work beyond a already fixed point on the grid after a fused spur!!?

Anyway could still do with some more help or advise on the 3 wir connection of the turbine and willing to share advise about my own air/water heat pump systm with rads and vacume tube instalation that I have been runing for 6 months now....John

    Sadly not.

Power generation and anything outdoors is deemed a "special location". See Table 2 on page 8.

Note that Extra-Low voltage lighting is on the list as well. This means 12V halogen downlights are notifiable unless they just plug together. It's because the current is high and fires have been caused by people using wire that's too thin and/or or poor connections.

As far as I can that also means the little Infra Red LED light that I set up for my bird box camera might be notifiable :-) If it wern't for the cost I would just love to submit a Building Control Application on a bird box! It raises such questions as... Is it a habitable room? Does the door sill comply with part M (disabled access) etc..
