Wow! the state of the art moves on apace!http://www.bdonline.co.uk/story.asp?storycode=3127259&origin=BDweeklydigest .This is brilliant. Notably going right to the top for heavy-duty constructional/environmental optimisation advice from Arups, this project gets top eco-marks.

It does that without the weirdness of http://www.bdonline.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=426&storycode=3126408 and http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=991 .

http://www.bdonline.co.uk/Journals/Builder_Group/Building_Design/14_November_2008/attachments/In%20the%20detail.pdf kindly gives away exactly how it's done.

Liking the fact that at last we are seeing many developments such as this emerge - that look contemporary without being weird; that epitomise the KISS/thermal envelope/passive/district heating system that is so proven to work; that show that 'sustainable' is not about technology and cost, but about people and being clever.

Some more are around: Kingerlee Homes, Bladon (Lincoln Grove) ( http://www.natural-building.co.uk/kingerlee_homes_and_nbt.htm ), St Piran Homes Godolphin View ( http://www.stpiranhomes.co.uk/html/developments/godolphin.html ).

Ok, let me wade in with more:

    http://www.wellwoodleslie.com/project.php?id=21

Scottish, so to around CSH3+/AECB silver level, with EV tube solar, all natural materials (Timber frame, Hemp, Pavatex Diffutherm and Pavatherm Plus+ and Baumit Lime Renders, Natural paints and floor finishes, recycling facilities etc, a good few are lifetime homes standard with extra circulation spaces for wheelchairs etc), lots of community input to the design and layout of buildings and rooms etc.

All for £850 a m2......! Who said sustainable was expensive?

I am so hoping to see more people chipping in on this thread with some good self builds / developments etc - for me getting great looking buildings (Like Toms example) alongside good data is important - we need to 'wean' lots of developers and home owners off the idea that a house is brick, upvc windows and some shocking effort to make it look 'mock Victorian', and that to be sustainable means bolting on a panel.....

Come on people - old, new, big, small - show us some good examples of buildings.
