Yes, I am spending under CAD100 for blocking and construction adhesive to make the exterior OSB of my 140m^2 indoor pool airtight. I estimate my blower door test will be under 0.6ACH@50Pa vs 1.5ACH@50Pa estimated if I did not use blocking & construction adhesive (the first test on my main house where I did not use the airtight OSB technique was 1.48ACH@50Pa). The additional air-tightness will save me over $100/yr.

I think all publications should stop referring to payback years and start talking in rate of return. You don't put £1000 in your ISA and expect it to turn into £2000 within 5 years, so why expect some cavity insulation to do the same! (but it can actually do it in 2 years if you have none at the moment).

Rate of return is a much bigger incentive for people to take action now [than CO2 or energy security]- especially as more people are now staying put and upgrading/extending instead of moving. Given that ISA rates are down to around 2% you're better off spending the money on house improvements.

Alternately you could look at it as additional costs of borrowing - ie if you save enough to pay a loan back to get the money in the first place then that works too. (Also might need to look at LTV ratio as well but could still work).

Simon, so you are saving £1,500 per year in heating bills to what you had before? That is a payback of 6.6 years minimum. And if the external insulation improves the look of the house the value goes up too.]]>
