Not strictly a green question, but I hope someone can help.

We are planning to put a large (6m x 2m) lift and slide door set in the south facing wall of our sitting room. Can anyone help me understand the building control restrictions on new window openings?

I'm told that the total amount of windows can't exceed 25% of the floor area. We live in a two storey house - do both floors count? And how do you do the maths? Do you just total up the floor area, and then add the total area of the windows and work out the percentage?

I think what's confusing me is why it's the floor area and not the wall area.

In Scotland BTW in case the rules are different.
