<![CDATA[I've collected almost one year's worth of data from a La Crosse anemometer on 11m pole. The data on actual windspeeds come as 'windspeed' (89760 data points) and 'Gust speed' (57271 data points). 'Wind speed' averages (via speadsheet calculation) 3.58 m/s with 'Gust speed' averaging 6.6 m/s. Simple question: what is my average windspeed? Is it simply the lower figure? Or is it Wind Speed + Gust Speed divided by 2. I assume that my average windspeed is 3.58m/s so far as considering installing a wind turbine is concerned. There doesn't seem to be anything about this 'out there' on the web. Can anyone give me a simple answer please?]]>

<![CDATA[More info required on how the anemometer logs data. The 89760 wind speed samples represent one every 6 mins. I suspect each sample represents the average wind speed over the previous 6 mins. In which case it includes the gusts already. Check with la Crosse?]]>

<![CDATA[I've searched the La Crosse (unhelpful) website for this info without luck. Like you, I assume this reading (every 5 minutes, but there are small gaps in data when batteries failed or I forgot the download the stored data from the base station's limited memory) is itself an average. It sounds like I ignore the gusts info so my average speed is around 3.6m. Surprising in NW Wales! Thanks anyway.]]>
