I'll shortly be installing my (timber) windows and doors which will hopefully arive from Russell & Adpol.

I believe I have the process sorted. I'm ready with steel straps, cavity closers, polysulphide sealant, foam packing rod.. But being thorough, it seemed sensible to also read "BS 8213-4:2007 Windows, doors and rooflights. Code of practice for the survey and installation of windows and external doorsets"

.. But £142!!

It annoys me so much the price of out British Standards. Is anyone willing to donate a copy - or advise me that it's not so necessary provided I follow common sense and XYZ ?

I've installed many windows. I find the guidance in the Approved Documents is more than adequate.

AD B1 [Means of escape]
AD L1/L [Thermal requirements]
AD F [Ventilation requirements]
and possibly [though I've never had good reason to check]
AD E [Airbourne sound]

The main regulation for me is that habitable rooms upstairs require 'a minimum unrestricted openable area of 0.33m2 and having a minimum clear opening width of 450mm' In practice this means fire egress hinges.

I wouldn't waste good money on the BS. If I were making windows yes, but just fitting - no

Hope this helps

 dont waste your money,
Make your own cavity closures , DPC and PUR
fix on 4 straps to window , 2 on each side, top and bottom, long enough to fix to inner skin
Stick it in the hole ,
In each corner fit small packers to level and hold it firm
foam it in allround, let it form a skin then push it back in slightly in from edge of frame, with a spare packer end
fix straps to inner skin
silicon/trim up/skim/dry line/clad etc.
it you want longterm airtightness use window foil tape or similiar internally
hay presto

Thanks guys, I have read much of those docs in getting this far, so that sounds all good.

And James- yes pretty much what I had in mind, Indeed I am making (some of) the cavity closers with old PU. It's nice to get someone to confirm things though. (My builders aren't much use - they run a mile from wooden windows!)
