    Hi,
After a long period of looking for timber windows at budget realistic prices I have had to resign myself to fitting UPVC windows. I would like to know though if anyone has an opinion on the composite doors available. I do not like the look of the UPVC doors at all and how does a upvc door compare in terms of energy efficiency etc? Many thanks,
    Gusty.

Gusty are you sure about the windows? I was at the point of giving up too, but Russell Timbertech DG worked out very similar in cost to my local uPVC supplier. And jeld-wen's basic "sovereign" range from the builders merchant is about half that, albeit a bit old fashioned looking.

    Evan,
I keep on hearing similar stories but I have had quotes from 15 timber companies and all have been at least £7000 more than upvc. I am going for a better U value than my SAP calc shows so I am trying. I just cannot justify the cost difference. I have had a quote from Russell Timbertech. I will dig out their price and compare again.
    Gusty.

Ah, fair enough. I've only had a limited number of quotes and require only half a dozen windows so the difference in overall bill is much smaller too.

    Sorry, carry on!

When you say 'composite' are you talking about GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic)?

I had a chat with the blokes at Albo today who reckon that using 3g on their windows only adds 4% to the cost. I ask them to give me a comparison with a normal 2g spec. We'll see the price difference when it comes but their prices do seem to be very reasonable.

    They do good doors too.

One of best for exterior doors that I have found for price -v- performance is Premdor

They do quite a range - worth a peek

    ( absolutely no connection! )

There is a door thread about insulated doors on here. I found that IG doors in wales do steel and fibreglass doors with foam cores at relatively reasonable prices. Still about twice as much a basic UPVC door GBP 600-700 vs 300, but the most cost-effective of the well-insulated ones. If you don't need a lot of glass in your door they seems like good gear.

Thanks for the advice all. I will look into IG and see what they can offer. I think in all honesty that the company I am dealing with may be buying from then anyway,
    Thanks again,
    Gusty.

Slight hi-jack - anyone know of any companies providing 3g doors (we need the light!).

    Plenty in mainland Europe

Many of the European window manufacturers do high spec (e.g. PassivHaus) fully glazed doors based on their window designs. The prices look pretty reasonable, even for someone like Internorm, especially compared to a solid PassivHaus door.

Might also be worth talking to Greensteps. They seem to have a good quality (PassivHaus) window product at a good price and can do glazed or custom doors to your design.
