I am having to rethink this, time, money, convenience, winter coming etc.

Thinking about Evan's proposal to work from the inside. How would you insulate between the studs and on the inside of the studs, while retaining the existing outside arrangements?

I am thinking of flexible woodfibre insulation push fit between the studs and something dense on the inside, woodfibre board, or dense acoustic rockwool in between battens and plasterboard?

My concern is that if i take off the plasterboard inside and put insulation between the studs, and then something on the inside, I will be cooling the exterior of the studs and the cladding, so more condensation likely. It has lasted 50 years quite well but really if I make this change i ought to have a ventilated cladding arrangement and/or a vapour barrier inside?

Your thoughts are welcome, pic below (from the outside).

Peter

I would extend the sill with an ali profile or good wooden one then add insulation over the studs and then breather paper and refix the cladding

I wouldn't worry about upping the insulation internally so long as you use a vapour barrier inside. The brick piers are convenient for hiding the extra thickness of insulation outside.

Do you an internal skin or is the wall only 100mm thick?

What materials?

Peter

Personally (and some might think my aproach is too cautious but here is what I would do.

If it is IMPOSSIBLE to remove the bituminous felt and direct applied cladding I would consider installing 25 x 25 mm battens to the sides of the studs up against the felt and then install rigid insulation (I know what I normally say) between studs. This will create a 25 mm void that you can introduce ventillation from the outside in to.

You can then add as much insulation to the inside as you can/want and then install a vcl and wall linings.

Without the ventillation, the felt becomes too cold (because of the extra insulation) and you might cause a condensation risk. This way you can leave all of the outside alone but still minimise risks.

Practically speaking, there are about 30 or 40 stud 'spaces' to fill with a lot of 25mm battens, I wonder if it would be possible to stick the rigid insulation to the inside 75mm of the studs? Is there a suitable adhesive?

Peter

Peter - I guess you could do that. I think Celotex do a metal z clip that can be used to fit insulation to the inner face of the studs or rafters which may compliment a sticky solution.
