I have a problem with my laser level.

I need to level 2 padstones 8m apart, but they are set at floor level and so i cannot get the laser level down to this level. I am wondering if i have bought the wrong level. Can you adjust the head of a level to move downwards ?

Failing that i am just going to have to use a truss and roofing lats to get my level on the opposite side of the room.

Has anyone got a better idea?

The level simply establishes a horizontal datum.
Set it up, hold a vertical staff, rule or whatever placed on the top of one pads then measure the distance from the lazer datum down to the top of that pad. Swing round onto the other pad and do the same. Then alter the height of one of the pads by the difference between the two measurements you've just taken.
For example if the measurement down to the top of pad "A" is 900mm and the measurement down to pad "B" is 910mm then you need to either lower pad "A" by 10mm or lift pad "B" by 10mm.
As a final check do the whole thing again once you've reset the pads and hey presto the two vertical measurements should now be the same.

That makes sense. thanks for that.
  1.
Lasser levels are great but there is nothing to beat a water level 100% accurate over any distance you can make your own two clear bottles and garden house mark the bottles in cm the same on each one fill with water when level water will be at same height in each bottle simple regards roger

water levels :- great if you can get bottles with 1/2" outside diameter necks - I couldn't, so with tap hose connectors I got it going. Next problem was with air locks, with one end higher then the other, took an age and loads of water to flush them out. Then I had to mount the bottles vertically, all in all a great bother. Then if you moved a bottle higher to get to some level, water came out of the other end. . .
    A real pain.
Lasers are great, except for use in bright sunlight. Shoot from one end, do your references, just wander along with a tape measure to catch the spot, read and log the distances to the deck as you go. The bubbles do not seem all that sensitive and may not be aligned to the line of the laser, so to check, turn your laser upside down and repeat this will remove the errors from the alignment of the bubble to the laser line. Shoot from the other end to remove the possibility of the bubble's "centre" not being truly horizontal.

Most of the lasers come with a pair of red specs which highlight the beam/spot even in bright sunlight. And they can be bought from most diy sheds nowadays anyway, or just go online and google for the things.
